Day 1 - We begin our journey to New Mexico on I-25 traveling along the Front Range
crossing over into the "Land of Enchantment". Our first stop on the Santa Fe Trail brings us to Raton, New Mexico where we will have lunch on our own. Following lunch we'll visit historic Fort Union National Monument. This was one of the largest military forts, and was the chief quartermaster depot from 1851 to 1891 for nearly fifty forts throughout the region as well as the primary station for the troops assigned to protect settlers and travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. Continuing on the Santa Fe Trail, we head for the historic town and the oldest state capital in the United States, Santa Fe, where we will spend the next two nights with dinner at our hotel tonight. (Dinner)
Day 2 - After breakfast we head for the historic old pueblo city of Taos. You will have
time to explore the town square and visit the quaint shops. We will head south on the high road through awe-inspiring scenery and visit the 225 year-old Las Trampas church. A stop at the Chimayo weavers is a must before lunch at Ranch de Chimayo restaurant. This is an internationally known dining and historic location in the region still run by the members of the original founding Jaramillo family. This afternoon we visit the old town square in Santa Fe for the first time. Dinner tonight is at an outstanding local restaurant with time to see the Christmas lights on the square. After dinner we take in the 20th season for the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, presenting "A Merry New Mexico Christmas", a wide variety of music from around the world with a little bit of something for everyone. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 3 - After breakfast we will make one last visit to the Santa Fe square, before we
head south on a scenic route to Albuquerque. You will experience the beauty along the
way of mountaintops and lush valleys. A lunch stop will be made in Madrid, an old
mining town with a restaurant full of local flavor. We will take time to explore the fun
shops in the quaint New Mexico village. We arrive in Albuquerque, where we stay
the next two nights, in time to visit Old Town before we depart on the Luminaries
Cavalcade with our own police escort. We wind our way through the Albuquerque
neighborhoods to the enchanting glow of countless luminaries. These little "fires" have
illuminated homes and landscapes every Christmas since the 18th Century. After the
Cavalcade, Christmas Eve dinner will be in Old Town. We have sent Santa Claus your
hotel address and room number, so you better be good!! (Breakfast, Dinner)
Day 4 - Merry Christmas!!! After breakfast we travel to Santo Domingo Pueblo for the
ceremonial religious Indian dances. This pueblo is one of best known tribes of the
Southwest Indians, largely because of their skill in marketing their jewelry and other
crafts. After the festivities, we will board the coach, have a box lunch, and then enjoy a
spectacular afternoon ride on the Sandia Peak Tram. Our sumptuous Christmas Dinner
awaits us at the hotel on our return. (Breakfast, Box Lunch, Christmas Dinner)
Day 5 - After breakfast we head back to Denver with several interesting stops along the
way. We arrive back in Denver with fond memories of our Southwest Christmas and the
new holiday friends we enjoyed on this tour. (Breakfast)
