A great dining value if you are staying at a Disney resort is to purchase a dining plan. It is a big savings that allows each person in your party to 1 counter service, 1 dining service and 1 snack per day. There is a wide range of dining experiences from theme dining, and character dining to special and unique dining and very formal signature dining. Our children are teen-agers, so we did not do any of the character dining. Here are some of our favorite dining experiences. At the Animal Kingdom Lodge we got a flavor of Africa at the Boma restaurant. It is a family buffet which resembles an African marketplace and you dine under thatched roofs. Experience the culinary team as you watch them prepare varied flavors of over 50 Africa countries. At MGM we had fun experiencing an old-fashioned drive-in movie theater at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Restaurant. You can park yourself indoors under the starry sky in a vintage convertible and watch old movies on the big screen. We had great hamburgers with fries and ice-cream shakes reminiscent of the 50's. The wait staff even wears roller skates when they deliver your food, just like the original drive-in movie theaters. We experienced China and ate at the Chinese restaurant Nine Dragons in the China Pavilion at Epcot. It was like eating in a Chinese palace surrounded by carved wood figures and Chinese lanterns. The food was very good and very large portions. At downtown Disney we ate at Bongos Cuban Café. It is also a club where you can rumba and salsa to top Latin acts. The restaurant and club was created by the music artist Gloria Estefan. It is a tropical setting where you can savor Cuban specialties. It has an open air feeling with an outside patio along the waterfront. Our last night in Orlando we ate at the Kona Café, at the Disney Polynesian Resort. It is very convenient to spend the day at Magic Kingdom and then take the monorail to the Polynesian for dinner. We then went back to Magic Kingdom after dinner to watch the fireworks. The restaurant is a casual café with an exotic South Seas feel. They serve American cuisine with subtle Asian influences, such as macadamia-crusted mahi-mahi, Asian noodles bowls and oven-roasted chicken. It has an open pastry kitchen and the desserts were to die for. I thought they had some of the best food. Enjoy your dining!
