Jill's Tips on Catalina Island
On Catalina Island, you can do everything…..or nothing at all. The island pulses with positive energy. I've been going there for the past eleven years, and each year it just gets better! It has the warmth of a small town in a fun, island destination! The year-round population of 3500 make the town of Avalon quaint and friendly. Some people go for the scuba-diving, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, or frolicking in crystal-clear waters. Others go for the horseback riding, world-class golf, parasailing, or exploring charming shops and galleries. And then there are those who prefer to do nothing but relax on the beach. You can reach Catalina in an hour by boat or in 15 minutes by helicopter. Once you arrive, the town of Avalon is easy to navigate on foot. No cars are allowed, but the town is only 1 square mile in size. And the picturesque harbor that Avalon is nestled around provides a good excuse to slow down and enjoy the view. Instead of shuttle buses, try renting a bicycle or one of the famous golf carts. Catalina Island has had a unique relationship with Hollywood filmmakers for almost a century. The Island has been immortalized on the silver screen hundreds of times and has been transformed into the coast of North Africa, from Tahiti to the American frontier (It has had a large herd of buffalo since 1924) and back again. The Hotel Metropole is my favorite place to stay. It is just steps from the beach. It has elegant spacious rooms, many of which have ocean views. The Catalina Casino is a round Art Deco structure, 12-stories high, and surrounded by the sea on three sides. It is not actually a gambling hall, but rather a "place of entertainment". Once the host to famous Big Bands, it now attracts crowds for celebrations of all sorts. It was completely restores several years ago. The outdoor balcony encircles the ballroom and offers breathtaking views of Avalon Bay. Don't forget to look up at the 5 Tiffany chandeliers!
